The Fanzine

Jesi has been contributing to The Fanzine since last October and is currently working on a profile of the artist Glenn Kaino. Friend and trusted editor Ben Bush solicited Paul to contribute artwork to illustrate the article Knowing Me, Knowing You, Knowing Them, by the inimitable Louis Chude-Sokei. Click here to read!

the purtills do berlin

before we departed for the american tour, we had the pleasure of hosting meg, joe, brendan, and marcella in berlin.
they were a shining beacon of fun in the middle of our travel preparations, which included paul ripping as many of his records as possible for his upcoming west coast mini-tour and jesi writing copy for an interactive berlin art guide which will launch at the beginning of next month.

keep checking in for updates and photos of our travels through the states.

in the meantime, peep Candy Says, jesi's recent piece on interview's website and installment #1 of photos.

new article

What started as a fangirl list of my favorites of the famous quintessentially "LA people" has recently been published in the most recent issue of Fabrik Magazine as a short feature called looking at LA.
Fabrik can be found at most LA area art venues and bookstores or you can read the piece online here.

Paul's design for Javelin's forthcoming album No Mas has been sparking up the internet as well. We'll post some of the links as we compile them.

february

at one point in december we thought that this would be a mild winter. and then one day it started snowing.
then it snowed some more. and some more. and some more.

and. some more.

occasionally we have warmer days that loosen up the solid chunks of ice that line berlin's sidewalks. but then comes another cold snap followed by more snow, transforming the entire city into one giant slip and slide.

i was walking to the ubahn to meet paul at our friend martino's birthday party last night and nearly fell down four times while loaded down with an armload of birthday gifts and kitchenware that i had borrowed for way too long. one thing that may interest our american family and friends reading our blog is that no one (and we mean no one) removes the snow or ice from in front of their property here. some people put rocks or sand in front of their place, but other than the sidewalks of those generous few, berlin will be a skating rink until the spring thaw.

all griping aside, this week marks our one year anniversary of being in berlin. as such, we thought we'd show a few photos from our year.

learning a new language can be difficult. jesi always liked to keep motivating study aids close at hand. this photo shows her favorite: an east german familial scene and heart shaped salami.

this week has had its highs and lows. our year here barely marked a blip on our collective radar because our energy was focused towards paul's stomach flu, the seemingly interminable cold, and jesi's pending application with the de appel curatorial program in amsterdam (she was supposed to hear friday, but the decision has ben postponed until wednesday).
our thoughts and love have also been with paul's grandmother, mabel, who has been ill recently.

spirits lifted last night, however, with a particularly rousing dance party at martino's.

after dancing out our winter funk, we accidentally stole one of the party guests non-alcoholic beer.

jesi really hopes that we haven't knocked the rightful owner off the wagon with this stunt.

und unserere Gesichter, mein Herz, kurz als die Lichtbilder

Text by David Horvitz:
For the duration of 2010, John Berger's And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos, will slowly be typed, word for word, and sent out in daily emails using an announcement list.* Each email will consist of a small text, most likely the size of a single paragraph, and take no longer than a minute to read. Similar (in size and time) to the quickly written email - those emails that come into our in-box, like text messages, and grasp our attention only for a moment (a moment of continuous distraction where you are not really there and nothing is really achieved -only the perpetuation of continuous fragmented stimulation). The attempt here is to play in this area of distraction, and, over time, attempt to to generate through accumulation and agglomeration, a larger, continuous and more graspable thought. Or maybe, through fragmentation, the book will be lost.

I've been doing translation into German for David's project. A process that is doubtlessly awkward and probably full of errors, but is making me love the German language and its texture deeply. I will be updating the site daily, or as close to daily as possible.
